Flood Services Canada, the Greater Toronto Area’s leading 24-hour emergency flood, fire, and smoke damage restoration response service team, is commenting on a family in Etobicoke struggling with a water sewage backup more than a week afterflooding.
Gwen Greene, her husband, and their three children were forced to endure a difficult experience after a recent Toronto flood caused a sewage backup in their basement. The entire ordeal cost the family $17,000 in damages, plus an additional $150.00 every night they have had to stay at a hotel. “If you’ve never witnessed or had the unfortunate task of personally dealing with a water sewage backup, it can be extremely unpleasant,” says Chad Vanvari, owner of Flood Services Canada. “In this instance, the Greene home had 20centimetresof sewage, which was more than enough to cause significant damage to their belongings.”
The backup that led to the flooding was caused by a blocked city sewer pipe. And because it was sewage water that played a determining role in the flood, the insurance company chose to decline the Greenes’ claim, which would have provided them with $50,000 to replace items and $10,000 for housing.
“We’ve responded to a ton of water damage cleanups at Flood Services Canada and understand what it’s like for families not to be able to live in their homes for any period of time against their will. For this family, it was even worse because they stayed in a hotel for the entire week their home was being restored,” Vanvari concludes. “It’s a situation you hope no one ever has to go through, but the reality is that these things happen and you have to be able to respond quickly. Our thoughts are with the Greene family right now and we want them to know we completely understand what they are going through. We want to stress how important it is for home and business owners to review theirpolicies andfully understand their insurance coverage.”
