Tips for Preventing Mould After a Spring Flood

Flood Services Canada Inc., the Greater Toronto Area’s leading 24-hour flood response team, is offering tips and suggestions for how to best preventmouldfollowing spring flooding.

“Mouldcan grow remarkably fast; just two days after a flooding is usually enough time,” explains Chad Vanvari, owner of Flood Services Canada Inc. “Removing it can be an intensive process—we’re working on a very largemouldremediation project right now. It’s precise work to be so thorough and also stand by numerous safety standards at the same time.”

The hard work that is required formouldremoval is why Vanvari says prevention is best. “After a flood, and when it’s safe, retrieve anything that didn’t get affected by water as soon as possible and store it in a dry place,” Vanvari advises.

Removing any lingering flood water is the next step, but Vanvari admits it can be difficult for people to try this on their own: “Mops and buckets are an option, but not a good one. In cases of severe flooding, you’ll need submersible pumps or water extractors. Rentals or remediation contractors are also available.” He adds that clearing the structure of any debris brought in from outside should also be done at this step.

“Drywall and carpets are big culprits formould,” continues Vanvari. “Drywall is remarkably porous and can’t be cleaned of mould—it has to be removed. Carpets will get waterlogged and their padding becomes a breeding ground for mould. Cleaning up following a spring flood can easily become a big job. It is best to leave this to the professionals.”

The end goal is to ensure the building is as dry as possible, as fast as possible. “This not only minimizes mould growth, but can prevent it entirely if you’re quick enough,” Vanvari concludes. “Professional flood companies have the drying equipment as well as trained and certified technicians who will do the job quickly and do the job right.”

Flood Services Canada Inc. is a leader in flood remediation along with mould, sewage backup, and fire and smoke damage cleanup. They use rapid response teams to contain and repair damages to minimize costs to the building owner. More information can be found on their web site at www.floodservices.ca.
